As Cambodia prepares to export its first batch of durians to China, Chinese media highlight intense competition in the country's durian market. Cambodia has evaluated 122 durian farms and 30 packing facilities for export approval, with shipments expected to begin this year if they meet Chinese standards.
China imported nearly $7 billion worth of durians last year, mainly from Thailand (57%) and Vietnam (41.5%), with smaller shares from Malaysia and the Philippines. Cambodia faces growing competition not only from these countries but also from new entrants like Indonesia and Laos, as well as China's own rapidly expanding domestic durian industry.
In 2024, Cambodia produced over 36,000 tonnes of durians from more than 5,000 hectares of plantations.
